Gymnastics 7-11: A Session by Session Approach to Key Stage 2 – This programme is designed to promote the development of more stylised
gymnastic movement which leads on from the ‘Movement Education’
approach in Key Stage 1.
Children in the later primary years of schooling are becoming capable of
developing and performing carefully controlled movements and
movement phrases which are pleasing both to watch and perform and
which are skilful in their execution.
Some of the work may appear to repeat that which was asked of the The
children should be concentrating more particularly on younger children
(in Key Stage 1)—but the focus is now different. correctness, on control
and on the beauty of their movements. It is not a backward step if this
focus is emphasized.
However, it is not intended that each of the early sessions of Year 3
must be taught if teachers feel that their children have already
experienced this work.
Definitions are often difficult and imprecise. A definition of gymnastics is
not necessarily helpful—yet it is necessary to know what characterizes the
work. It would seem that whatever form of gymnastics is evident
(Olympic, rhythmic, educational, sports acrobatics, vaulting and agility)
certain kinds of attributes give the work its name gymnastics. It has
several components worth examining
